Basic Tamil Reader is a selection of twenty five texts representing folk and mythological tales, commentaries on politics and society, and descriptions of literary episodes. They are in formal Tamil controlled for structures and vocabulary to suit the level of students, who have learned the alphabet, sandhi and the basic structures of Tamil through colloquial or informal Tamil. The Reader can be also used by learners who want to skip learning to speak when they use some bridge materials such as the elementary texts and tales given in this site. They help to bridge the spoken and written styles of Tamil by way of introducing the learners to the written style with regard to spelling of words, simple and inflected and alternate words common in the written style.

The exercises under each text of the Reader are meant to improve reading comprehension and vocabulary. Grammatical notes are selective and are for grammatical forms above the elemenatary level.
