Tense
1. -ன்- /-(உ)ச்சு/ -இ/ய் -ன்- -ன்-
Verbs of this class are weak. They are mostly words of heavy syllable (more than one syllable or one syllable with a long vowel) and they end in -உ. Some examples are பாடு, உருட்டு, தூங்கு, தூக்கு, ஊது, கஷ்டப்படுத்து, ஏமாத்து, ஒளறு, இருமு, பண்ணு, கல்யாணம்பண்ணு. Some verbs of this class that have a different syllabic structure undergo a change in past tense are சொல்லு, போ, ஆகு, கல்யாணமாகு. Verbs that have this shape, but take a different past tense marker போடு, சாப்பிடு.
பாடுனான் பாடுச்சு பாடி பாடுன பாடுனவன் பாடுனது

Verbs in the classes below have the same past tense marker in all grammatical forms.
2a. -த்த்- -த்த்- -த்த்- -த்த்- -த்த்-
Verbs of this class are strong. There is no particularly preferred shape of the verb except that they do not end in இ, ஐ. (No verb ends in எ, ஏ or ஈ). Many of them are of light syllable (one syllable with a short vowel and end in -உ) or end in ர். Some examples are படு, கெடு, பார், வளர்.
கெடுத்தான் கெடுத்துது/கெடுத்துச்சு கெடுத்து கெடுத்த கெடுத்தவன் கெடுத்தது
வளத்தான் வளத்துது/வளத்துச்சு வளத்து வளத்த வளத்தவன் வளத்தது
2b. -ச்ச்-
Verbs of this class are strong like those in (2a), but they end in இ, ஐ. Some examples are படி, பிடி, எரி, மறை, வை. (2b is like 2a in formal Tamil)
படிச்சான் படிச்சுது/படிச்சுச்சு படிச்சு படிச்ச படிச்சவன் படிச்சது

3a. -ந்த்-
Verbs of this class are weak and are counter parts of those in (2). There is no particularly preferred shape of the verb except that they do not end in இ, ஐ. Many of them may have the same form as those in (2), but grammatically are intransitive, that is, they do not take an object (Their subject may be the object of their counterpart in (2). Some examples are வளர், உக்கார், தெரி, புரி, ஏமாறு (-று in this verb is dropped, which is rare).
வளந்தான் வளந்துது/வளந்துச்சு வளந்து வளந்த வளந்தவன் வளந்தது
ஏமாந்தான் ஏமாந்துது/ஏமாந்துச்சு ஏமாந்து ஏமாந்த ஏமாந்தவன் ஏமாந்தது
3b. Verbs of this class are weak as those in (3a) but they end in இ, ஐ. Their transitive counter parts are the verbs in (2b). Some examples are முடி, மறை, வை, செய். (3b is like 3a in formal Tamil)
மறைஞ்சான் மறைஞ்சுது/மறைஞ்சுச்சு மறைஞ்சு மறைஞ்ச மறைஞ்சவன் மறைஞ்சது

(Final -ய் drops; -ஐ is pronounced like -அ here and elsewhere)
4a. –ட்ட்-
Verbs in this class are weak. They are of light syllable and end in –டு. Some of the verbs have the same form as those in (2a) but are intransitive. Some examples are கெடு, விடு, கஷ்டப்படு (படு is the verb of such complex verbs with a noun base like கஷ்டம்). Verbs that do not have this shape in this class are போடு, சாப்பிடு.

4b. –த்த்-
Verbs of this class are same as those in (4a), but end in று. There is only one verb of this class in modern Tamil. Unlike (2a), this verb is weak; the past tense marker in formal Tamil is –ற்ற்-. The verb is பெறு.
பெத்தான் பெத்துது/பெத்துச்சு பெத்து பெத்த பெத்தவன் பெத்தது
5. –ந்த்-
Verbs of this class are strong and they end in -அ. Some verbs of this class are நட, மற, பய (This verb does not have present and future conjugation). Verbs that end in other vowels are இரு, அண்ணா (This verb is not used in imperative).
நடந்தான் நடந்துது/நடந்துச்சு நடந்து நடந்த நடந்தவன் நடந்தது
இருந்தான் இருந்துது/இருந்துச்சு இருந்து இருந்த இருந்தவன் இருந்தது
There is one verb வில்லு that is strong (unlike (7b)) and ends in -ல் , which belongs to this class. But -ந்த்- is -ன்ன்- before –ல்(லு), which drops.
நின்னான் நின்னுது/நின்னுச்சு நின்னு நின்ன நின்னவன் நின்னது
Conjugations given below apply to a limited number of verbs.
6a. -ட்ட்-
Verbs of this class are strong (unlike (4)) and they end in ள், which drops. The common word in this class is கேள்.
கேட்டான் கேட்டுது/கேட்டுச்சு கேட்டு கேட்ட கேட்டவன் கேட்டது
6b. -த்த்-
Verbs of this class are strong (unlike (4b)) and they end in –ல்(லு) , which drops. Unlike the verbs in (2a), which are also strong, the tense marker in formal Tamil is -ற்ற்-. The common verb in this class is வில்லு.
வித்தான் வித்துது/வித்துச்சு வித்து வித்த வித்தவன் வித்தது
7a. –ண்ட்-
Verbs of this class are weak (Note that past tense markers with a nasal go with week verbs, except (4) and they end in -ள், which drops. There are only a few verbs in this class.
உருண்டான் உருண்டுது/உருண்டுச்சு உருண்டு உருண்ட உருண்டவன் உருண்டது
7b. -ன்ன்-
Verbs of this class are weak and they end in -ல்லு , which drops. The common verb in this class is கொல்லு, மெல்லு. (The marker is formal Tamil is -ன்ற்-)
கொன்னான் கொன்னுது/கொன்னுச்சு கொன்னு கொன்ன கொன்னவன் கொன்னது
8a.-த்-
Verbs in this class are weak and they are few. One common verb is அழு; some verbs like செய், வை, which take the past tense marker –ஞ்ச்- (as the verbs in (3b)) take this past tense marker in formal Tamil.
அழுதான் அழுதுது/அழுதுச்சு அழுது அழுத அழுதவன் அழுதது
செய்தான் செய்துது/செய்துச்சு செய்து செய்த செய்தவன் செய்தது
8b. -ட்-
Verbs of this class are weak and they end in –ண். The only common verb in this class that occurs in combination with nouns is காண். This is similar to (7a) except that the nasal is in the verb itself.
கண்டான் கண்டுது/கண்டுச்சு கண்டு கண்ட கண்டவன் கண்டது
(காணுது in present tense has an alternant காங்குது in informal Tamil)
8c. -ன்-
Verbs in this class are weak and they end in –ன்(னு). The only common verb in this class is தின்னு. This is similar to (7b) except that the nasal is in the verb itself. (The tense marker in formal Tamil is –ற்-, not –இன்-, as in (1)).
தின்னான் தின்னுது/தின்னுச்சு தின்னு தின்ன தின்னவன் தின்னது
(To avoid ambiguity of தின்னுது ‘it ate’ with தின்னுது ‘it is eating’, தின்னுச்சு is preferred in the past tense and the alternant form திங்குது is common in the present tense in informal Tamil)
