3. Dictionary Skills – Identifying verbal bases for dictionary search
The story below is followed by its translation. Identify the verbs (in their base form) in the story, get their meaning from the translation and arrange the verbs in the dictionary order. You can use a dictionary to get the meaning of the verb if the translation of the story does not help.
எறும்பும் புறாவும்
ஆற்றங்கரையில் இருந்த மரத்தில் ஒரு புறா கூடுகட்டி இருந்துவந்தது. அந்தப் பக்கம் ஒரு வேட்டைக்காரன் வந்தான். புறாவைப் பார்த்தான். அதைக் கொல்லக் குறிவைத்தான். அப்போது தரையில் இருந்த எறும்பு அவன் காலைக் கடித்தது. அவனுக்குக் குறி தப்பியது. புறா பறந்துவிட்டது.
இன்னொரு நாள் எறும்பு ஆற்றில் தவறி விழுந்துவிட்டது. கரைக்கு வரமுடியாமல் தத்தளித்தது. அதைப் பார்த்த புறா ஒரு இலையைக் கிள்ளி ஆற்றில் போட்டது. எறும்பு அதில் ஏறிக் கரைக்கு வந்தது.
The Ant and the pigeon
A pigeon built a nest on a tree (which was) on a river bank and was living there. A hunter came by that side. He saw the pigeon. He aimed {his arrow} to kill it. An ant that was on the ground bit his foot at that time. He missed his aim. The pigeon flew away.
The ant erred [slipped] and fell into the river on some other day. It struggled {for life} without being able to come to [reach] the bank. The pigeon, which saw this, pinched a leaf and dropped it into the river. The ant climbed on it and came to [reached] the bank.
