5- வானமும் மரமும்
முன் ஒரு காலத்தில் ஒரு செடி வயலோரத்தில் வளர்ந்தது. அது வளர்ந்து பெரிய மரம் ஆயிற்று. மரத்தின் கிளைகள் வானத்தில் விரிந்தன. வானம் கோபம் அடைந்தது. “ஏ மரமே! நீ மண்ணில் பிறந்தாய். மண்ணில்தான் இருக்க வேண்டும். உன் சாதி தாழ்ந்த சாதி. உன் நிலை தாழ்ந்தது. நீ என் எல்லைக்குள் நுழையக்கூடாது” என்று சொன்னது.
மரம், “அட! நீ உயரமான இடத்தில் இருக்கிறாய். அதனால் உன் சாதி உயர்ந்த சாதியா? உன் நிலை உயர்ந்ததா?” என்று கேட்டது.
“ஆமாம். எல்லாப் பொருள்களையும் நான்தான் காப்பாற்றுகிறேன். எல்லாவற்றையும் இங்கிருந்து நான் பார்க்க முடியும். என் மாதிரி அறிவு உனக்கு உண்டா?”
“ஐயா, அறிஞரே! நான் முட்டாள்தான். எல்லோரையும்விட உன் பெருமை பெரியதுதான். ஆனால் உன்னால் இதற்குமேல் வளர முடியாது. நான் வளர வேண்டும். என் வளர்ச்சிக்கு இடம் வேண்டும்”.
“என்னோடு போட்டி போடுகிறாயா? உன்னை என்ன செய்கிறேன், பார்”.
வானம் வெப்பத்தைக் குறைத்தது. மரத்தால் குளிரைத் தாங்க முடியவில்லை. இலைகள் பழுத்துக் காய்ந்து உதிர்ந்து காற்றில் பறந்தன. மரம் மொட்டை ஆயிற்று.
“அழகிய மரமே! உன் இலைகள் எங்கே? உன் வளர்ச்சி எப்படி இருக்கப் போகிறது?” என்று வானம் கேலி செய்தது.
“நீ என் உடம்பை மாற்றலாம்; என் உயிரை உன்னால் அழிக்க முடியாது” என்றது மரம்.
“அதையும் பார்க்கலாம்” என்றது வானம்.
வானம் பனியைக் கொட்டியது. தரையெல்லாம் பனி. மரமெல்லாம் பனி. மரத்திற்குக் குளிரைத் தாங்க முடியவில்லை.
இருந்தாலும் அது கீழே சாயவில்லை.
மூன்று மாதம் கழிந்தது. பனி நின்றது. மரம் தளிர்த்தது. தளிர் இலை ஆயிற்று. கொஞ்ச நாளில் பூக்களும் காய்களும் தோன்றின.
மரம் அழியவில்லை.

3. உண்டாயின: Formal Tamil makes a distinction morphologically between singular and plural in the neuter. The neuter plural ending is -அ when the past tense suffix is
-இன்- (ஓடின) and அன elsewhere (வந்தன).கோபம் அடை: This has an alternate கோபம் வா, which has its subject in the dative- வானத்திற்குக் கோபம் வந்தது. Another example is ஊர் புகழ் அடைந்தது: ஊருக்குப் புகழ் வந்தது. (புகழ் ‘fame’)
4.உயரமான and உயர்ந்த are two forms of the adjective. The first is formed by adding –ஆன to nouns (an exception is போதுமான ‘enough’; the second is formed by adding to a verb or a verb root the past tense suffix and –அ. (an exception is அழகிய, which has an alternate அழகான). Another example is தாழ்வான and தாழ்ந்த. பெரிய, சிறிய etc belong to the second category, but in modern Tamil they are not segmented.
5. பார்: This verb (in imperative or in the first person present tense form) is used to suggest challenging someone.
6. உன்னை என்ன செய்கிறேன்: This double direct object construction is different in meaning from object and indirect object construction: உனக்கு என்ன செய்கிறேன். In the first sentence உன்னை is not a recipient, but an object acted on.
7. எல்லாம்: One sense of it when added to a noun is ‘all over’. மரமெல்லாம் ‘all over the trees’. Another example: எனக்குக் கையெல்லாம் வலித்தது ‘I had pain all over my hand’
